We are a small Volunteer Fire Department in Millerton Oklahoma. We was formed in 1982 with one truck with no water tank and 1 fire extinguisher. We started out with only a hand full of members but stived hard to do what we could for our community. A few years later we bought another truck and dropped our ISO rating from a 10 to a 9. In 2004 our department had ceased to answer calls and had only 1 truck that ran which was a Millitary Duece & Half with a 1200 gal tank. The mayor of Millerton was ready to shut the doors and disband the fire department unless we could show major improvements in only a few short months. We elected a new younger fire chief who had promised if elected would bring this fire department to its full potential strength.
After being elected chief Don Coffey began recruiting volunteers from around his district which is 52 square miles. In a matter of a couple of months we had 3 trucks in service and enough volunteers to start serving our community again. Within 6 months we began to elect new officer and began to implement new SOP's and Regulations to govern our fire departrment. Joe Frunk was hired on as Millerton's Assistant fire chief. The fire department was lacking in only one area, training. We began a training program and started sending firefighters to school.
Today we are operating to standards with: 6 trucks, 4 officers, 2 dispatchers, 1 chaplin, and 4 trained firefighters in our main station. We are all NIMS compliant and exceed state title 11 training standards. We also have a sub-station which is staffed 5 days a week at the Choctaw Nation; Wheelock Academy Musem.
